There is a unique story behind each Wind Phone that is best told by its creator and/or steward. No one can tell it the way they can, so to that end, the format for Featured Wind Phone stories is to share the creator/steward's responses to the interview questions verbatim in their voice. Sharing our stories helps us to connect and heal and may inspire someone else to create or visit a Wind Phone.

Our Featured Wind Phone is in Somerset, Massachusetts, and it holds a special place in my heart as a former teacher and Bostonian. This Wind Phone is a powerful example of what can happen when a remarkable teacher like Merilee Bowers shares her vision. She didn’t just teach her students about grief and empathy - she invited them into a real, meaningful project that now offers comfort to many. Through her guidance, her students helped create a Wind Phone that speaks to the heart, showing how one caring educator can ripple compassion through a whole community. Thank you, Merilee Bowers, for creating and sharing your Wind Phone and for showing your students how one act of kindness can touch many lives.

 

Where is your Wind Phone located?

Elm St. Acres Trailhead,

Somerset, MA 02726


The Blue Raider Wind Phone is situated within Elm Street Acres, a nature preserve located just off Elm Street in Somerset, Massachusetts. There’s ample off-street parking that is adjacent to the trail which is marked by a large sign that includes a map with a lovely image of a deer. It should be noted that with the spring rains the trail that crosses over the pond area is mucky therefore mud boots are highly recommended!

The Blue Raider Wind Phone was built at the top of a winding trail and is roughly a 5–7-minute walk from the parking lot. There’s a sign midway at the fork in the trail that points the way.

Why did you choose this location?

The wooded site lends privacy and quietness to those seeking to sit with and potentially express the unfolding grief within. These moments of respite and conversation will hopefully be a place where the heart may open and commune with the natural and spiritual world.


Is your Wind Phone dedicated to or in memory of someone special?

The Somerset-Berkley Regional High School Ceramic teacher/student vision was to curate a space that honors the relationships of all who venture to this healing space, especially for those seeking comfort and a sacred place to grieve.


The ceramic students made hand-formed pocket stones that are placed within the booth for people to take as a gentle reminder that they are not alone.  These stones were made with love and intention. They are a testament to the many who came together to make this project a reality.

 

Do you have any advice for someone thinking of creating a Wind Phone?

If I could give any advice (especially if your vision is to build your booth on public land) it’s imperative that you are resilient and patient as it takes time to move through the local and state government process for approval. Our journey took 1.5 years from start to finish and took many detours; however, I think you will agree that this was time well spent. We were grateful to have the support of local businesses, school administrators, local and state government representatives, countless neighbors, families, and newfound friends we met along the way.


Is there anything more you'd like to share?

The forest floor was harvested for fallen twigs, branches, and vines, much as a bird would do to build its nest.  These materials were used to weave the walls of the booth and pay homage to the natural environment, and were designed to blend with the landscape in which it is situated.  It was the intention of all who were involved in bringing this Wind Phone to public land that it would become a respectful, integrated structure and not be intrusive. The thoughtful construction and mindful choosing of materials were instrumental in assuring that this booth would take its place alongside the wonder of all creatures big and small who call the land their home.


The Blue Raider Wind Phone structure was built by botanical artists Sam and Sarah, who co-own The Lilac Thief and work out of Warren, RI. They made our vision and intention to create a Wind Phone in our town a reality; we are forever grateful.
