Wind Phone in Lake Orion, Michigan

Sharing our stories helps us to connect and heal and may inspire someone else to create or visit a Wind Phone.

Our Featured Wind Phone is in Lake Orion, Michigan. Debby first learned of Wind Phones from her friend and after reading "The phone booth at the end of the world," by Laura Messina she was inspired to create one. Thank you to Debby, for sharing your beautiful Wind Phone and your story with us.

Is your Wind Phone is dedicated to or in memory of someone special?

This phone is in memory of Karin McGee and Scott Tarach, two lives taken too soon. Karin loved to garden, and this yellow bench is known as the “Bami Bench”. It was one she had in her garden. For veterans, and all those who struggle with mental health, I pray you get the help you need, and can experience love, peace and acceptance of who you are. RIP Scott.


What would you like to share about your Wind Phone?

When I first learned of Wind Phones this past summer from a friend, I knew I wanted one in my garden. After reading “The phone booth at the end of the world”, by Laura Messina, I knew I had to put one up. So much tragedy and loss has occurred in this community and with people I know.


I found the type of phone I wanted on Marketplace. When I told the lady whom I bought the phone from why I wanted it, she was moved. This phone was in the house of her father, a former veteran, who was in his 90s and had passed the prior year. She told me that her nephew was in Japan during the 2011 tsunami. He worked as a teacher and was trying to get people out to safety the day the tsunami hit. She stated when he saw a big wall of water approaching, he jumped into his truck and drove away. He was unable to save a 5 yr old girl and her mother. She said he was never the same after this. He no longer teaches. Grief hit him very hard.


I hired some guys to rebuild a shed this past summer. I told them of wanting to have a wind phone in my garden. They both loved the idea, offered to build the case, and install if for free. As veterans, they know first-hand the struggles veterans face with mental health. Scott, also a vet, was on the crew. He told me of an arcade he opened in Oxford, after the Oxford High School shooting, as he wanted a place parents and kids could hang out and be together. His child was there the day of the shooting, and he wanted to have a safe place kids and parents could have fun together. Dominic built the wind phone case; he and Kyle installed it. Tragically, two months after the wind phone was installed, their business partner Scott took his life. I hope this phone is a space of solace for those who struggle with grief and loss.
