There is a unique story behind each Wind Phone that is best told by its creator and/or steward. No one can tell it the way they can, so to that end, the format for Featured Wind Phone stories is to share the creator/steward's responses to the interview questions verbatim in their own voice. Sharing our stories helps us to connect and heal and may inspire someone else to create or visit a Wind Phone.

There is a sign towards the Labyrinth at the main entrance. Follow the sign. Parking is available on the property close to the labyrinth.
What year and month did you place your Wind Phone at this location?
September 2024
Why did you choose this location?
A year ago, I decided to create a labyrinth on the property. When I started, I knew that this space was sacred and that the centre was to be exceptionally special. Once I started the process of creation it came to me that this is where we should place the ashes of my father. (In Dec it would be 10 years since he died.) So, it became the labor of love labyrinth in loving memory of my and my husband's fathers. We had a small ceremony placing both fathers’ ashes in the centre and we planted a tree. This started a sacred ritual of visiting the labyrinth whether it be to just sit in the centre or do some weeding. Since then, the plants have grown, and we’ve gone through 4 seasons of being the keepers of the labyrinth. When my best friend died in June, I knew that the centre of this sacred space would be the perfect place for a wind phone to honor his memory.
Is your Wind Phone dedicated or in memory of someone special?
Our Wind Phone is in memory of Hugo Minnie. Hugo was a very important part of my life – for the first time in my life, I cannot find the correct descriptive language to fully convey what is in my heart. Writing being my first passion, even as I am typing here words fail me. Hugo was loud, gentle, kind, hilariously funny, brutally honest, strong, creative, smart, loving and fun. He was an amazing father who loved his girls with all his heart. A loyal, proud husband - loud laughter was the signature of him and his wife together. Hugo was a fantastic friend. Our friendship was a safe space where it was always ok to be our crazy, wild, undone perfect selves – a rock of unique stability and laughter the echo of this friendship.
Because we live in different towns daily connection via phone calls, WhatsApp's, silly photos and ridiculously long and detailed voice notes were second nature to us – maybe that is one of the reasons the concept of a wind phone to honor our friendship resonates so deeply with me. Not only did we live in different towns, but Hugo’s holiday home is in my hometown, Langebaan, incidentally, + well known for its wind – a place he loved with all his heart and that holds many good memories. So having a wind phone specifically in Langebaan not only honors him but on a deeper level celebrates his connection with this space over many decades - close to nature and the ocean.
On the 11 of June 2024 on a normal Tuesday afternoon Hugo died and a new normal started. A new unfamiliar & uncomfortable normal. Laughing, joking, sharing secrets & solutions to life’s biggest questions were instantly replaced by an eerie silence, physical absence and a hollow “gap” filled with sadness that I do not have a name for. The journey of creating this Wind Phone for Hugo has been as unique as it has been surprising and once again, I was being reminded of the perfection of the Universe and how everything works together as one. I am blessed to have a friendship that knows no end and continues to give and expand beyond the physical realm. The Unique concept of Phone of the Wind is a symbol of celebrating, acknowledging and honoring a unique friendship that started over 22 years ago and the knowing that energy & love does not die – it can change shape & can be transformed – but it does not end – it lives forever and it continues – just like the words we whisper into the wind.
Do you have advice for someone thinking of creating a Wind Phone?
Be patient, take your time, enjoy the process – a lot of healing and comfort comes from the journey, not just the end product.
Note from Amy: Nadea's sentence. " Unique concept of Phone of the Wind is a symbol of celebrating, acknowledging and honoring a unique friendship that started over 22 years ago and the knowing that energy & love does not die – it can change shape & can be transformed – but it does not end – it lives forever, and it continues – just like the words we whisper into the wind." is powerful and I just want to shout it out to the world! "...energy & love does not die – it can change shape & can be transformed – but it does not end – it lives forever, and it continues – just like the words we whisper into the wind."
