There is a unique story behind each Wind Phone that is best told by its creator and/or steward. No one can tell it the way they can, so to that end, the format for Featured Wind Phone stories is to share the creator/steward's responses to the interview questions verbatim in their own voice. Sharing our stories helps us to connect and heal and may inspire someone else to create or visit a Wind Phone.

Our Featured Wind Phone is in Merritt, British Columbia, Canada.
This gorgeous Wind Phone was a collaboration between Merritt and District Hospice Society. Thank you, Carol Fulcher, for sharing your beautiful Wind Phone and its story.
Where is your Wind Phone located?
Pineridge Cemetery
1675 Juniper Drive
Merritt V1K 1K6
The City of Merritt added the Wind Phone to the cemetery retrofit; a three-part project and the Wind Phone is in phase one.
What year and month did you place your Wind Phone at this location?
February 28, 2025
Why did you choose this location?
A devastating flood hit the City of Merritt in November 2021 and many citizens suffered tremendous losses. The employees and volunteers of Merritt and District Hospice Society tried to find ways to support the community’s loss and grief. It was timely to discover the ‘Wind Phone’ in Japan and the profound effect it had on people's loss and grief.Â
Is your Wind Phone is dedicated to or in memory of someone special?
Merritt Wind Phone was brought to fruition in memory of my daughter Megan Fulcher, 41 yr old, who succumbed to her Brain Cancer January 2025 and to Mayor Mike and Brenda Goetz's granddaughter Ember Ann Young, 7 yr old, who died November 2021 as a result of the Merritt Floods.Â
Â
Do you have any advice for someone thinking of creating a Wind Phone?
Merritt and District Hospice Society reached out to several people groups. On the day of dedication February 28, 2025, so many students, teachers and volunteers had such a sense of pride in the finished project. We will have a ‘grand opening’ mid-April where the entire community will be invited to attend and learn more about the phone of the Wind.Â
Is there anything you'd like to share?
It was a pleasure to reach out to Mayor Mike Goetz who collaborated with Merritt and District Hospice Society in the planning of a Wind Phone for the City of Merritt. The project was completed February 28, 2025, with the support of the students from Nicola Valley Institute of Technology and Merritt Senior Secondary School and Nicola Valley Health Care Auxiliary.Â
Merritt and District Hospice Society wishes to express gratitude to their volunteers and to the City of Merritt citizens for ongoing support and relationships as we learn how to support one another in loss and grief.Â
