Featured Wind Phone - Portsmouth, Rhode Island

telephone of the wind, wind phone, my wind phone

There is a unique story behind each Wind Phone that is best told by its creator and/or steward. No one can tell it the way they can, so to that end, the format for Featured Wind Phone stories is to share the creator/steward's responses to the interview questions verbatim in their own voice. Sharing our stories helps us to connect and heal and may inspire someone else to create or visit a Wind Phone.

This week's Featured Phone is in Portsmouth, RI; the creator and keeper of this gorgeous Wind Phone, who prefers to remain unnamed, shared that her Wind Phone is placed on the crest of a hill on Aquidneck Island. She said, “I would like it to just be there for people without a person associated with it.” This Wind Phone is named the Goosefield Wind Phone. According to my research, this is one of the early Wind Phones recorded in the United States. Thank you, friend, for sharing the Portsmouth, Rhode Island Wind Phone with us.

Where is your Wind Phone located?

41°33'00.7"N 71°15'10.1"W

What year and month did you place your Wind Phone at this location?

July 2021

Why did you choose this location?

It is on the Aquidneck Land Trust trail, which is a public path and a beautiful walk. It’s also on the crest of a hill on Aquidneck Island and surrounded by cow pasture and re-wilded fields which means it gets ocean winds pretty much every day, all the better to send words on the wind.

Is your Wind Phone dedicated or in memory of someone special?

I had been planning it for years but was motivated to finally pull it together when COVID hit and people had a tsunami of loss.

Do you have any advice for someone thinking of creating a Wind Phone?

It’s good if it can be nearby so you can keep an eye on it and take care of it. It’s also great to have a weatherproof notebook and a cup of pens so passersby can leave a note or write a letter to their loved one.

I'd love to feature your phone! You can find all the information here to submit your Wind Phone.
